Head Coach
Derek McGregor Derek McGregor is starting his 1st year with the AC Vikings. His extensive swimming experience and easy-going demeanour make his swimmers feel at ease while training.
Derek is originally from Montreal, Quebec. He started competitive swimming at 9 years of age for the Dollard Des Ormeaux Swim Club. He moved to the Etobicoke Swim Club in Toronto at the age of 12, and represented the club at numerous provincial championships and team championship events. After the 1998 swim season, Derek decided to retire from swimming and focus his time on coaching young swimmers.
Derek started coaching in the 1998 season for the Etobicoke Swim Club. While there, the club won numerous provincial championships. Derek coached many regional, provincial, and Age group national champions, including a SWAD swimmer who won international medals.
In the 2004-2005 season Derek made the decision to further his coaching career and moved to the Mississauga Aquatic Club. While at Mississauga, Derek helped grow the development program to one of the largest in the country, and was also the creator of the Mississauga Aquatic Club Development Summer Camp. Derek was a member of two Team Ontario Age Group Training Camp coaching staffs where he worked beside legendary swim coach Dr. Jeno Tihanyi, who was the coach of Alex Baumann (1984 Olympic Gold Medallist).
On top of all of these other accomplishments, Derek was also a coach with the Etobicoke Master Swim Club and worked with 25 Ironman tri-athletes as they prepared for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Derek is very excited to be the Head Coach at the AC Vikings.
